The Buck Institute is the nation’s first independent research facility focused solely on understanding the connection between aging and chronic disease in pursuit of the Mission to increase the healthy years of life.
At the Buck Institute, world-class scientists work in a unique collaborative environment to understand how normal aging contributes to the development of conditions specifically associated with getting older, such as Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases, cancer, stroke, osteoporosis, heart disease, diabetes, macular degeneration and glaucoma. Their interdisciplinary approach brings scientists from disparate fields together to develop diagnostic tests and treatments to prevent or delay these maladies.
We were able to speak with Neelanjan Bose, Ph.D, who works jointly between the Buck Institute and the University of California, San Francisco, to talk about his work.
Tell us a little bit about your work?
My work revolves around studying endogenous small molecule signaling, secondary metabolite/natural product identification, and metabolomics.
What interested you about this work?
I have always been excited about finding new things and this line of work allows me to find new compounds and new structures on a weekly basis. It is very satisfying.
Favorite part about what you do?
I would say my favorite part, other than discovering new compounds, would be structural elucidation work and identifying new pathways.
What is the most difficult aspect of your job?
Having to deal with unknown metabolites. It is not often clear what analytical steps that need to be followed or what columns to use. It all turns into a giant mystery.
Favorite tradeshow or conference? Why?
Keystone Chem Bio Conference because it was a perfect combination of chemists and biologics.
Favorite way to relax outside of work?
Read books…read some more books (not work related).
You’ve used Phenomenex Sample Prep products now for the last 9 years. How would you describe the experience?
Phenomenex is a one-stop chromatography solution for me that never fails! They provide easy access to information and quality products. I have been using their columns and SPE cartridges almost every day for the last nine years.
