Interview with Dr. Venkat Reddy- 2nd Annual PhenoPrep India Symposium

PhenoPrep IndiaAs the first North American PhenoPrep Seminar approaches, we wanted to take a look at this year’s 2nd Annual PhenoPrep India Symposium.

It was held on April 21st, 2017 where eight distinguished scientists were invited to speak and discuss innovations and challenges in preparative and process scale chromatography. The symposium had a fantastic turnout and exceptionally productive Q&A sessions.

Dr. Venkat Reddy, Ph.D., Phenomenex Business Development Manager for Purification Technologies, provided his insights from the successful event.

PHE: What were your favorite moments of the symposium?

VR: The symposium itself, to put it simply, was both inspiring and insightful.

The PhenoPREP symposium accomplished what we set out to do, which was highlight the diverse and positive role that Phenomenex plays in the chromatography field. One of the most encouraging results seen at the symposium were the collaborations that occurred among the variety of scientists in both the public and private sectors. These meaningful interactions are what helps move the science community forward.

However, if I had to choose my favorite, it would be the presenter panel discussions. Getting to observe the audiences’ enthusiasm for each of the speaker’s presentations along with the amazing questions that were asked really made the symposium a useful tool for the prep chromatography community. Audience members were not afraid to ask the tough questions and the presenters didn’t shy away from answering them. This provided fantastic discussions with elaborate answers that we hope help all those who attended.PhenoPrep India

PHE: Were there any trending pharmaceutical topics?

VR: One of the speakers, Dr. Malolanarasimhan, gave an interesting presentation on Biopharmaceutical production through a microbial fermentation process in the development of liraglutide, a glucagon-like peptide-1 agonist (GLP-1 agonist). This peptide is the latest block buster drug, containing 31-amino acid sequences with a palmitoyl-glutamic acid substitution. Most importantly, it is used in the treatment of Type 2 diabetes. The product was approved by the European Medicines Agency (EMA) on July 3, 2009 and by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) on January 25, 2010.

PHE: Were there any trending Prep topics?

VR: One of the most interesting presentations of the symposium would have to be Professor Bezhan’s talk on futuristic preparative chiral chromatography. This included topics such as the unusual effects of mobile phase separations and temperature of separation of enantiomers with the Phenomenex Lux® series of packing material. Bezhan also spoke about future material and technology in preparative chromatography, such as, core-shell silica based stationary phases, lab-on-a-chip, separation of enantiomers, and ultrafast separation of enantiomers.

Another popular prep topic came from Dr. Murali’s, USV Ltd, presentation regarding centrifugal partitions chromatography (CPC) compared to regular liquid chromatography. His detailed presentation started a discussion of supercritical fluid chromatography (SFC) and its applications. The audience asked several questions, which Dr. Murali answered in great detail.

PHE: What were top questions from attendees?

VR: During every panel, the audience asked several questions, which almost always turned into a brilliant discussion. Here are some of the top questions asked that turned into a thought provoking dialogue.

  • What role does the length of packing and the height of a DAC column play in purification?
  • What are some available methods for loading resin to a first amino acid?
  • What is the role of TFE solvent in SFC purification?
  • What is a good strategy for MS noise control?
  • What is the compatibility between chiral separation modes and mobile systems?
  • What are some advantages and disadvantages of both coated and immobilized chiral stationary phases?
  • What are the roots of reversed phase chromatography?
  • What is the best optimization of sample loading onto a DAC column?PhenoPrep India

PHE: What are the key takeaways from the event?

VR: I strongly believe that this symposium was one of the strongest technical seminars on preparative chromatography that has been held in India recently. The event covered almost all aspects that related to achiral and chiral preparative chromatography. Both the audience and the speakers gained greater knowledge in manufacturing, separation, and the purification of biologically active molecules, especially novel and generic peptides.

The symposium also provided the opportunity to invite strong and experienced industry professionals, such as, Dr. Nagana Goud (Co-Founder of Auropeptide), who is a pioneer in the manufacturing field of any type of peptide from small scale to large scale. His own session on related impurities in peptide medicines was exceptionally engaging, entertaining, and very technical as well.

PHE: What was the feedback like from attendees?

VR: From the comments and feedback that was gathered during and after the event, the universal opinion of the symposium was an extremely positive one. Everyone seemed very satisfied with the quality of the presentations and the discussions. The only downside that seemed to be expressed was that the amount of time to interact with speakers during their respective sessions was too short. A problem that can easily be remedied next year!

Overall, the 2nd Annual PhenoPrep India Symposium was a great success! We all look forward to the 2018 show and how the presentations and discussions will evolve. The future of preparative chromatography is bright and very exciting.
