Discover the Good Work of The Rossendale Trust

The Phenomenex UK team got together and spent two exceptionally fulfilling days working with The Rossendale Trust, an organization that provides supported living care to adults with learning and physical disabilities in the local area.

The Rossendale Trust grew out of the determination of two local families who saw an urgent need for resources for those with disabilities in their community, and decided to do something about it.

In the late 1960s Alan and Mary Chapman became increasingly aware of the lack of resources offered to families with children who had disabilities, as their son Richard who had been born with a learning disability, wasn’t receiving what he needed through the day service he attended. They found many other families having the same problem.

Alan and Mary had the idea of looking for a house which they could convert into a short stay, a respite home for children with disabilities. Their vision was to provide safe, modern accommodation, which families could trust, and which would care for all the children as individuals.

In December 1972 the Chapmans and another family, the Hydes, bought the Rossendale Hall and Lodge by raising the money from the sale of their own homes, plus a donation from a local benefactor and the subsequent sale of the Lodge. Both families moved into the Hall in the spring of 1973.

Today, The Rossendale Trust provides care and support to 64 individuals at seven sites in Macclesfield and Buxton in the United Kingdom. The Trust supports people across a wide spectrum of ability and disability. They are constantly striving to grow and expand to meet and surpass the needs of the people they care for.

Supported living allows for each resident to explore choices in their own lives, and to fulfill their potential. The Rossendale Trust supports all their tenants in hopes of them achieving their potential, at whatever level of ability.

The Phenomenex UK team was able to provide their support to The Rossendale Trust through hands-on work. They spent two days throwing themselves in a variety of tasks including office painting, gardening, shed building, cleaning out cellars, and helping in any other way they could.
