Canada Goes Cannabis: MSC and Phenomenex Take On New Heights

Molecular Science Corp (MSC) and Phenomenex join together to take on Canada’s newest industry – Cannabis.

As of October 17th, 2018, the production, distribution, sale, and possession of cannabis will be legal across Canada. The Cannabis Act aims to not only set a strict legal framework for the above, but also aims to keep cannabis out of the hands of youth, keep profits out of the hands of criminals, and protect public health and safety by allowing adults access to safe, legal cannabis. With the passing of the Cannabis Act, this also opens doors for laboratories across the country for increased testing services available. Molecular Science Corp. (MSC) saw this opportunity and began the process of becoming a licensed Canadian laboratory services company by Health Canada, to deliver analytical testing and data-driven business intelligence to the growing cannabis economy.

Phenomenex is proud to be a working partner with MSC and their innovative methods and services in a blossoming industry and provide top of the line LC columns, like Kinetex® and Luna Omega®, and also vials, filters, and sample preparation products for their labs.

MSC will soon have a new central laboratory in Toronto, which will perform a series of analytical tests including potency, terpene profiling, pesticide, heavy metal, and mycotoxins testing.

And they are not only a step ahead in the industry, but MSC is also making strides to stand out. They have brought to the market the industry’s first mobile lab, a custom built 53-foot trailer, to provide onsite pesticide and cannabis testing solutions to customers.

The mobile lab has a variety of scientific instrumentation on board with a focus on liquid chromatography mass spectrometry and utilizing a Laboratory Information Management System (LIMS) to ensure seamless and efficient alignment of analytical results between the mobile lab, physical lab, and clients.

When the MSC mobile lab rolls to you, it provides Quality Assurance and Quality Control managers the opportunity to interact and collaborate with the MSC team of testing experts in several areas including, validating testing methods, Standard Operating Procedure writing, regulatory requirements, Laboratory Information Management Systems, and technology demonstrations.

Brigitte Simons, VP of Labs & Strategic Operations, spoke to The Analytical Scientist in August about the MSC mobile lab and said, “mobile laboratory services provide customers instant access to in-process data, so that they can optimize quality assurance programs tracking cultivation yields, safety, and accurate product labelling. It allows customers to access scientific advice and expertise, without having to budget for costly in-house infrastructure or recruit PhD-level scientists.”

On the MSC mobile lab, you will be able to find an assortment of Phenomenex LC columns hard at work aiding with everything from pest control management and environmental toxicity in consumer goods, to helping meet cannabis testing requirements.

It’s high time cannabis testing became mobile! You can learn more about MSC services here. Also explore the range of products that can be found on their mobile lab here.
